STREET 2 ELITE
05/28/2009
The 2009 summer streetball season tipped-off last weekend with the Street 2 Elite tournament in Edmonton.
It was the fifth event organised by east Londonder Mike Baptiste, who says he tries to give everyone an opportunity to ball.
"I try to pick not only the best, but also the hardest working players," he told us.
"And I try to bring everyone in...give everybody a fair shot. Just because you play for a team doesn't mean you're better than someone that doesn't. That's why we hold open trials."
So, as well as all the summer-run regulars, there were plenty of new faces.
Two things about the weekend really stood out.
Firstly, the dunk contest.
Jamming veteran Stefan Gill (all 5' 7" of him) and up-and-comer "Air Vandal" (himself only about six-foot) stole the show. I won't describe what they did - just see the pictures below.
Then there was the final.
I, like everyone else, thought this was going to be a wipe-out.
One side appeared to be STACKED - with BBL All-Stars Mike Martin and Daniel Sandell and a bunch of summer-ball veterans. The other team featured some good ballers but, with respect, seemed far, far weaker.
They soon proved everyone wrong though, ending the first quarter with a respectable lead.
"They can't maintain this," I thought.
But I hadn't counted on Zayne Gawanab.
The 6' 1" guard has been ballin' in Qatar this season (yes - QATAR!!?) and it seems to have improved his game. He ran the point very well - and was absolutely ON FIRE in the second half, hitting threes all over the gaff to keep his team in it.
But it was his last-gasp heroics which really stood out. Down two, he was fouled whilst shooting a three with less than a second left in the game.
Despite some mind games from Mike Martin, Zayne kept his cool to ice all three foul-shots and take the W.

"I was confident man," he told us after the game.
"Throughout the season I go in the gym and I work on my free-throws mostly, so I was confident. People were trying to trash me, get me out my game and all that, but I just ignored them, innit!"
Innit indeed! A great performance capping a great final and a great event.
